Macaroni??

Okay so I was thinking about that little song you sing as a kid...Yankee Doodle. The first verese goes like this...

Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony.
Stuck a feather in his hat and called it Macaroni.

But what puzzles me is...what is he calling "Macaroni"??? Is it the town?? His pony?? The feather?? Or his hat??

What do you think???

i'm going with naming the pony. sounds like somthing a yankee would name his horse since all the good names, such as Traveller, have been taken:)

Well, it seems to me that following the rules of English... the "it" would refer to the previous noun which would be - the feather. Why would he call it macaroni - I have no clue. Maybe he was hungry? Maybe he never got to eat lots of cheesy macaroni has a child and was craving some? Maybe you just have too much time on your hands to ponder such a statement. Here's another one for you, though. "Hey Diddle Diddle... the little boy laughed to see such a sight and the dish ran away with the spoon." My question is what became of the knife and fork? Why didn't they all run away together. Or were the dish and the spoon having a secret affair? Ack. Life. It is just full of questions.
